How to Reach Room 46

Spoiler warning. This guide reveals the final goal, required items, and the route. If you want to discover it yourself, stop reading and play another 10–15 days first — half the joy is the moment you realize what Room 46 even is.

What Room 46 Is

Mt. Holly is a 45-room manor. The map you find in the Drawing Room shows 45 numbered rooms. But the deed and the architect's plans both reference a 46th room — one that was sealed off and removed from the official count. Reaching it is the main objective.

Room 46 is not a draftable card. It exists in a fixed location relative to a chain of rooms, and the doorway only appears when three specific conditions are met within a single day.

The Three Conditions

The Room 46 doorway will appear on the West Wing's far wall when, in the same run, you have:

  1. Solved the Vault. The Vault must be opened during the current day, not a previous one. You need the 4-digit code (which is fixed across runs but discovered through letters and notes).
  2. Lit the Observatory. The Observatory's telescope must be aimed at the correct constellation for the current day's sky. This unlocks the Architect's diagram.
  3. Possess the Brass Key. Found exclusively in the Mine, but only after you've reached the third Mine layer — which costs 2 Gems per layer to descend.

The Route

This is the route most experienced players use. You don't need to follow it exactly — the draft RNG won't allow it — but stick to the priorities.

Phase 1 — Setup (Steps 1–20)

  1. From the Entrance Hall, draft a Hallway to your right.
  2. From the Hallway, draft the Pantry if available. If not, take a Kitchen.
  3. Aim for the Library next — you'll often find one of the Vault code letters here.
  4. Draft a Mine when it appears, even if you have to skip a turn waiting for it. The Brass Key is gated behind it.

Phase 2 — Resource Pump (Steps 20–40)

  1. Descend the Mine to layer 3. This costs 2+2+2 = 6 Gems. Bring at least 8 Gems before entering.
  2. Collect the Brass Key. Do not use it on anything — it's reserved for Room 46.
  3. Head to the Workshop. Combine the Lens Fragment + Optical Frame to build the Telescope Lens.
Gem priority: If you have fewer than 8 Gems before drafting the Mine, do a Storeroom run first. Most failed Room 46 attempts come from rushing into the Mine underfunded.

Phase 3 — Solving (Steps 40–70)

  1. Open the Vault using the 4-digit code. The door is in the East Wing — it's a steel door, takes 1 Key.
  2. Inside the Vault, take the deed paper. This doesn't unlock anything directly but marks the condition as met.
  3. Find or draft the Observatory. It's a rare card (purple). If it doesn't show in draft hands, you may need to retry on another day.
  4. Use the Telescope Lens on the Observatory. The constellation puzzle solution depends on the day's sky — see the Constellation puzzle guide.
  5. Take the Architect's Diagram from the Observatory's pedestal after solving.

Phase 4 — The Final Door (Steps 70+)

  1. Head to the West Wing. You enter from the Atrium.
  2. The far wall now has a faint outline that wasn't there before — the conditions are met.
  3. Use the Brass Key on the outline. The door materializes.
  4. Walk through. The day pauses; the credits-equivalent scene plays. You've reached Room 46.
After Room 46: Reaching it isn't the end of the game. New rooms unlock in your draft pool, including the Antechamber. Several puzzles open up only after your first Room 46 visit.

Common Mistakes

  • Going to bed too early. Many players panic at 20 Steps remaining and end the day. If you have all 3 conditions and the Brass Key, you can almost always sprint to Room 46 in under 20 Steps from the Atrium.
  • Using the Brass Key on a chest. The Mine's third layer has tempting chests right next to the Brass Key. They contain ~10 Gems. Not worth the run.
  • Wrong constellation reading. The Observatory is unforgiving — wrong answer locks the telescope until next day. See the puzzle guide before attempting.
  • Drafting Bedroom on the path. Walking through a Bedroom triggers a "sleep?" prompt every time. It's easy to misclick and lose your run.

Speedrunning Tips

The current world record for first-Room-46 is 6 in-game days. Common tactics:

  • Day 1 is reconnaissance only — collect all 3 Vault code letters and the constellation reading.
  • Days 2–3 are Gem farming runs through Mine + Storeroom loops.
  • Day 4+ is the execution run. With perfect draft luck, day 4 is possible. Day 6 is more realistic.
